Organizing Week 1 - The Desk

As promised, here is this week's organizing challenge. This desk in my den has become, as you can see, a dumping ground for everything I don't know where to put.

Originally, it was used as my desk for the home daycare I was running. But, I found that having 5 kids in my house each day was far too disruptive for my family (my kids couldn't even sit and relax on their days off school), so I cut everything back to just one little fellow.

Since I stopped the home daycare, I just started dumping all the things I was using onto that desk, with the idea of  "I'll deal with it later". Well, it seems like "later" has finally come!

My goal is to get everything daycare related off the desk and turn it into my coupon zone. I'm not sure if that will work or not, since the desk is a bit far from my computer, but that is what I'm thinking for now. But who knows what will happen by the end of the week!

Don't forget, if you're playing along, leave your blog link in the comments section so we can all see what you're working on as well as your progress. :)

A Fun Day Today and Getting Ready for Next Week

Today is going to be a great, fun day, and all free too!

A small town that is less than 5 minutes away is celebrating their 175th anniversary today and on August 9, I believe. (I'll have to check the other date, just to be sure. )

Today they are offering guided tours of the local church, Catholic School (which my son attends) and other points of interest. There will be an outside settlers display at the school, and at a local lake there will be classic 1920's picnic games, music, etc.

It's something we've been looking forward to for a few months now and it's definitely going to be a great time.

Ok, so on to planning for next week. I mentioned to you all that I was going to be doing a 52 weeks of organizing challenge. I have most of my list made up, and tomorrow I will be posting a before photo of the area I will be working on next week.

In case you're interested, here is the site that is hosting the event. I'm not doing mine along with them, but the idea definitely came from there. :)

So, just for fun, here is my list so far.

  1. desk in den
  2. top of piano
  3. bookshelf in den
  4. shelves in den
  5. computer desk
  6. top of entertainment centre
  7. pantry
  8. phone table
  9. kitchen junk drawer #1
  10. kitchen junk drawer #2
  11. kitchen junk drawer #3
  12. kitchen junk drawer #4
  13. bathroom closet
  14. linen closet
  15. closet under stairs
  16. ds's closet
  17. coat closet
  18. vanity in downstairs bathroom
  19. cupboard over washing machine
  20. kitchen cupboards left
  21. kitchen cupboards right
  22. recipe drawer
  23. tupperware drawer
  24. cat food stand
  25. master bedroom closet
  26. my dresser
  27. ds's dresser
  28. cupboard under sink
  29. cupboard over pantry
  30. cupboard over stove
  31. dresser in master bedroom #2
  32. recycle shelf
  33. curio cabinet in kitchen
That's all I have for now. But, like I said before, I'm pretty sure that by the time I finish what I have so far, I'll be needing to get back to the first things on the list. :) I'm hoping not. I hope that I'll be able to keep things clean and organized, make new habits, that sort of thing. But as much as I am a very positive person, I'm also a bit of a realist.

If there is anyone out there who wants to join me, I'd love to have some company while I'm organizing! Leave a comment here or email me at and I'll figure out a way to link us all together. :)

Old Navy's Tank Top Pre-Sale

Yesterday was the big $2.00 Tank Top presale at Old Navy!

After the little guy I babysit left, my son and I hopped in the van and drove 1 hour to the nearest store so I could stock up on some tanks.

I was a bit disappointed, because when I asked the girl on cash which tanks were included in the sale, she pointed to two tables, with only black and white on them. I questioned her about that and she informed me that they had put the rest of them away because they were "selling too fast" and they wanted to make sure they had enough to last the weekend sale. She told me that they were only offering the black and white for the presale.

Well, needless to say, that didn't go over well for me. I had just drove an hour to get a jump on a sale with a coupon directly from the company? No way. So, I asked to speak to the manager. There was no way they were sticking me with no selection on a company sponsored sale. My money is just as good as the people who were going to be shopping the next day.

I never did have a chance to talk with the manager, but she did send another girl out who took me to the back of the store. She asked me what colours I liked and then brought out 9 tanks for me to see. I took them all, plus one black.

I was very disappointed that I didn't get a chance to browse the colours, but since they weren't going to budge on that and let me see what was actually available, the only choice I had was the selection she chose or just black and white.

I did email their head office this morning, so we'll see what they have to say, if anything.

In the end, I got my tanks, which is great. I have a stack of new tanks for only $20. This will get me through a few years of not having to buy summer tops. That is fantastic!! I just wish I had been able to enjoy the experience a bit more. :(

Getting Ready and Back on Track

I just finished making up the menu for the next week. I'm so happy, I was able to use only meat that is in our freezer, so I don't have to buy anything! I will be taking advantage of a few sales that I found, but they will be for other menu's. I love saving money this way!!

In case you're interested, here is what I have:

Friday (tonight) - leftovers
Saturday - Roast pork with potatoes and carrots.
Sunday - nothing. We are taking advantage of a 175 year celebration where everything, including food will be free.
Monday - Country Salisbury Steak
Tuesday - Spaghetti and Meatballs
Wednesday - Sausage bake
Thursday - Chicken Alfredo and rice
Friday - It's Canada Day so we will be out and about. We'll either pack a picnic or eat hotdogs from a stand.
Saturday - Asian Beef Noodles
Sunday - I actually don't cook on Sunday's. This is our day out at Granny's where we have supper for lunch.

That gets me on track for grocery shopping on Mondays. I've been trying to do this for a while now. With 2 non-cooking days, this is the perfect opportunity.

I found a website or blog yesterday that is hosting a 52 weeks of organizing event. I decided that this was a great idea, however, I'm kind of a do things my own way sort of person, so instead of following their program, I'm going to do it on my own.

I will share with you all before and after photo`s of the area I'm working on each week. I'll post it whenever I'm finished. I don't have the full list made up yet, but I did get to week 32. I figure if I can make it that far, chances are I'll have to redo some of the first things on my list anyway. :)

If you'd like to join in with me, I'd love to have some company! Let me know, either leave a comment or email me at and I'll set up a way of linking our blogs. :)

Am I Living In a Disney Movie??

What a strange spring/early summer it's been so far. I have had more experiences with wildlife in the past 3 weeks than I have had in a very long time.

First was Mikey. He was a little red squirrel with very bad luck.

I had just come back from a morning of yard saleing with my mom. I was parked under our tree, where I usually park the van, showing off all my amazing finds from the morning.

We were all standing around the van, everyone was ooohing and ahhhhing over all the wonderful goodies I had aquired when we heard a rustling sound and a thud. I looked over to the front of the van, and lo and behold there was a little baby squirrel who had fallen out of the tree! A few days earlier, our springer spaniel Charlie had brought us what we assume was mama squirrel as a gift on our back step. So, we figure that the babies, who really were too young to be out of the nest, were hungry and looking for food which is what brought them out.

So, we grabbed a net and caught little Mikey, just to make sure that he was ok and not hurt anywhere. Other than a little bit of blood on his nose, he seemed fine, so we let him go.

A few minutes later, our son went over to check on the baby robins who were in a nest in our front yard. He lowered the branch when suddenly both babies flew out and landed on his face! We have 4 hunter cats, so my son and I spent the next half hour or so trying to catch these babies and get them back in their nest. It was tough, but we were finally successful.

Baby birds rescued, I returned to my goodies. I had purchased a gorgeous new hosta from a plant sale, and was happily digging in my garden when suddenly I hear a rustling sound coming from the tree, a thud then a soft chuck-chuck-chuck sound.

I hurry over to our back walkway and guess who I see, laying on his side looking hurt. You guessed it, little Mikey. Now I know that he's at least stunned, so I pick him up, put him in my skirt and to my amazement, he fell asleep!! I spent the next hour with a little baby squirrel curled up in my skirt, sleeping. I couldn't believe it!!!

Is that not, seriously, the cutest thing you've ever seen??

Moving on to last Friday. It's been a couple of weeks since anything animal or wildlife related has happened.

I had just returned from grocery shopping. It was later at night, because I had been babysitting all day. I head out to the garage where hubby is working on the truck. We're talking away when we hear a cat meowing. Thinking it's my tom cat, Tom, I start talking to him.

As I'm talking, out walks not Tom, but a little, long haired grey female kitten! She is so sweet and loveable and half starved. So, I get her some food and water and go to bed. It's been almost a week and she's still around. If she stays much longer, hubby might even let her in the house!

This past Monday, I was out in my garden digging up some soil to repot some houseplants. I'm in the back corner where it's well shaded and won't grow any veggies because of a gorgeous tree that Ontario Hydro will be cutting down this summer. I'm bent over digging away when I hear a rustling sound, a ting from something hitting the fence, then a soft thud. Right at my feet, literally at my feet, is a baby oriele that is taking it's first flight. Seriously, just sitting at my feet. I was just in the process of saying how gorgeous it was when, thankfully, it took off and flew over the shed.

Last, at least for now, yesterday I found a very large, very ornery snapping turtle in my garden. Somehow, he had managed to get himself trapped inside the fence and couldn't find his way out. After about 15 minutes of me armed with a large stick and a rough tote, I managed to get him into the tote and released him near the swamp at the edge of our property.

So far, that is all my Disney movie-esque adventures. I wonder what next week will bring?

Off To Get Free Cereal Today!

The day is finally here! At last, I can redeem my coupon for Free Chocolate Cheerio's or Fibre 1 Brown Sugar  Fibre 1. Quite honestly, I'm leaning towards the Fibre 1. Something about chocolate flavoured Cheerio's just doesn't appeal to me. Even my 11 year old son made a face when I told him about it. :)

While I'm out, I'll be picking up hubby's birthday present as well. I decided this year to get him a care package for work. I'm going to fill a travel bag for him with soap, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, deoderant, etc. I have coupons for all of it, too, so in the end I'm going to be able to get him a great birthday present plus save $13.50 doing it!

I do love coupons. :)

Oh, and in case you didn't already know, Clearly Contacts is giving away another 10,000 pairs of prescription eyeglasses tomorrow. That's twice in the last week or so they've done this!

All you need to do is go to Clearly Contacts, pick out three frames that you like ( just be sure they don't say "coupons not applicable") and enter the code "FREECANADA622" in the box when you check out. Make sure you have your prescription on hand and that's it! All you need to do is pay for shipping and within a few days you'll have your brand new eyeglasses. Sweet, right?

I ordered a pair for my daughter last time and they were in within 4 days. They were so nice, too! Too bad she didn't like them, but it's her loss, I guess.

Oh, and Old Navy is having a Tank Top sale on Friday June 24. With this coupon, you can get up to 10 tank tops for only $2.00 each! I know where I'll be Friday after the daycare baby goes home!!

Have a fantastic day everyone! I know it's going to be a great one here. Lots of saving and lots of fun!!

New Blog Name

I've been trying to think of a new, more unique sort of name for this blog, and I think I may have it now.

While we don't actually have any chickens anymore, this is a name my husband came up with one day a couple of years ago for a book he thought would be kind of fun to write. It came about one day because we were, literally, chasing chickens around our front and back yard. It seems that they were a bit smarter than us and could figure out how to get out of the coop no matter what we did. Hubby thought a journal of sorts, telling our story of how we went from town folk to country folk, with humourous stories along with tips and hints would be a great thing to do.

So, I've decided to take that idea and run with it. Which brings us to today, and the blog name change.

I will still be posting great finds, tips and hints, like before, but I'll be adding a human element as well, to make things more interesting for both you, my readers and for me as well.

I'm looking forward to sharing our ups and downs in life as we work on getting ourselves out of debt and onto a more simple, and rewarding life. :)

Coupon Policies For Popular Canadian Stores

Whether you are new to couponing or a bit of an old hand at it, one thing you absolutely must know is each store's coupon policy. There is nothing worse that getting to the cash and finding out you can't use those precious coupons that you brought with you.

Another issue that a lot of people run into are cashiers who don't know or haven't been trained in, their companies policy.

I highly suggest that you download and print off each of these files, then put them into your binder. They will help you and the cashiers when there is confusion over a policy. You can educate yourself on each store, and if there is an issue, you have proof with you that you're following correct procedures.

Here is a list of the policies I have on hand so far. Like I said, print these off and take them with you whenever you go shopping. These are like gold! :)

Canadian Tire Coupon Policy - pdf file
Loblaws Coupon Policy - pdf file
London Drugs Coupon Policy - pdf file
Safeway Coupon Policy - pdf file
Save on Foods Stacking Policy - pdf file
Shoppers Drug Mart Coupon Policy - pdf file

Zellers Coupon Policy - pdf file

Good luck with your grocery shopping and couponing! With these in your possession you will always know exactly what you're doing wherever you're shopping.

You'd better hurry, this one won't last long!

Welcome To Canadian Coupon Saver! I'm so happy you've made your way here. :)

Hopefully, you'll find this blog helpful. I will be searching out the best deals and sites for you, my fellow Canucks. It can be very difficult, especially when starting out to weed through the coupons, to find the ones that can actually be used in Canada.

As more Canadians start using coupons, the rules and regulations of each store will keep changing as well. I will be updating and posting the policies as they change. For now, you can find a list of store policies here.

My hope is that you will keep coming back to learn and save with me!
